Gnomes Read, Write, and Think

Reading Grit

In our discussions of character strengths, we spent one whole week discussing “grit.” Grit is having the tenacity to stick with a task even in the face if great difficulty.

In reading this can be tricky. We want kids in fifth grade to read whole books, sticking with the book until they finish it, except for the rare occasion when the book just isn’t working for some reason. Thus, we have devised a list of reasons for abandoning books. I am closely monitoring student reading to be sure they are reading just right books and only abandoning them when absolutely necessary.
