Gnomes Read, Write, and Think

"Yeah, I've seen those things they think are gnomes," said Ron, bent double with his head in a peony bush, "like fat little Santa Clauses with fishing rods…” -JK Rowling

Writing to Think: Taking Notes

It can be very difficult for students to research facts and use them in their writing without sounding like they have plagiarized.

One important first step is to use a special process for note taking:
1. Read a part of the text. (A sentence, a paragraph, etc)
2. Put the text aside. Think about what you just read.
3. With the text closed, jot down the important parts that you need for your research.
4. Check back in with the text for specifics like dates and names.

This will help make the language in student writing be more authentic, increases understanding and avoids plagiarism.
